I HATE cockroaches! They really freak me out. I don't know what it is about them, I just find them disgusting. Especially the flying ones. UGH! It gives me shivers just thinking about it. Anyway, I've thought about trying the canned crickets. Omelette has no interest in live ones. Anyone else give these to their hedgies that don't like live ones? I thought maybe she'd approve of the stink, and find it appetizing.

Girl, I couldn't agree more about the roaches! Also, I do give my hedgies the canned crickets, and they do like them. I bought them at PetsMart. I read how to freeze them to keep longer and cut down on the smell for us .

Peanut didn't like the freeze-dried crickets I hope she changes her mind so I don't waste them. I can't say I blame her. They don't look very appetizing. I'd rather eat a mealworm too.

Dinner to share with your hedgehog: http://splendidtable.publicradio.org/recipes/pasta_mealworm.html I found this recipe when I was looking for something quick to serve over pasta for dinner this evening. It seemed like something worth noting. (I'm not sure what "yellow" mealworms are, or whether they're different from the golden-beige mealworms Leona loves...) Boy, are my kids in for a treat tonight!!

none of my kiddies have ever liked freeze dried crickets - they have the taste and consistency of carefresh bedding.
They do love canned crickets, and Benson's pet stores carry Zoo Med's mini-crickets (and my local store has abeen able to special order them for me). There are the small 3 week size crickets, 200 to a can and my hedgies LOVE THEM. So do I for I don't have to cut them up, or watch my hedgies chew and spit out the shell of the big ones.
I did live crickets last year - never again. I would put a hedgie in the bathtub and feed them there for I did not want them getting loose in my apt. They hop and are hard to catch. Too much of a hassle. And you have to keep buying small amounts of crickets for if you get a couple dozen and only have one hedgie, eventually the crickets will grow and MAKE NOISE.
What I have done this year is allowed some of my live mealworms to morph into beetles. Yea, I know they are bugs and creepy, but the mealworms don't seem to move as fast as crickets, I scoop them up on a long ice tea spoon and flip them onto their backs so they can't crawl off and then feed them to my hedgehogs when we are socializing... I make them chase the spoon across the bed - they love the game and the reward.
The only one who does not get beetles or canned crickets is Max, he's almost five and has lost most of his teeth. So he just gets live mealies.
Of my three hedgehogs only PK will eat dried mealies and roasted waxworms, neither Max or Ginger will touch anything dried. But Pk is on a low fat diet so she only gets beetles and canned crickets. Ginger gets both live mealworms, live beetles and canned mini crickets.
If anyone had told me I'd be gut loading worms and raising beetles I'd have said NO WAY... seeing how much they love the live worms and beetles makes the creepiness worth it... but I just will not go back to doing live crickets.

clutterbuster, I've let some of my mealworms turn into beatles for the same reason. I also was wondering if they'd have baby mealworms and produce more? Any experience? Anyone else?

Yup the beetles lay the eggs that become the baby worms so just leave them be and you will have a new batch of babies soon.

Crickets are easier to feed than ya would think
Get a ten gallon fish tank and get a top for it, usually these lids are near the reptile area and have little doors you can open for the expressed purpose of feeding bugs they run in price from $5-10. I have a 10 gallon tank I use for all sorts of stuff, I fill it with a bit of bedding, add crickets, add hedgehog, CLOSE the lid and VIOLA it's a hopping wonderland. I took the hedgehog out when he was done and then left the crickets out on the porch.
.. sadly we had a surprise rain shower that day and I made an amazing discoery... CRICKETS CAN'T SWIM
