Exciting news - 2008/05/07 15:35
I'm taking in some new older hedgies. I was just browsing online at exotics for sale (with no intention of bringing any home) when I came across an ad for a few older hedgehogs that need a home with a small adoption fee. The ad was a little old, but on a whim I decided to respond. Well, they are still available, they are older females and the woman says they are shy, she got them from a pet shop and they never really came around. They are close to my house, so I'm going to pick them up on Monday.
After Gnarly I'm just totally in love with hedgehogs!! I can't get enough of these guys!
My question is, should I keep them quarantined to be sure they don't have mites? I already made a vet visit. And should special food be bought for them? Or can they eat the same thing as a younger hedgie?
I'm just so excited!

That is exciting news
Quarantine for 30 days is a good idea not only for mites, but in case there are other communicable diseases that can be passed from one to the other.
Find out what they are eating now and plan to transition them all to the same food slowly to prevent stomach upset. They should all be able to eat the same food unless the older hedgies have missing teeth or some other issue.

That is so wonderful! Congratulations and those hedgies are lucky to have such a loving mommy like you.
I am thinking some day I would like to do the same thing. Heck, I think I may end up with a lot of hedgies at some point
I feel like I have a lot of love to give.
Again, that is so wonderful.

Hooray!!!
What I don't understand is why anyone would ever give up a hedgehog in the first place? They are perfect pets!

Some people buy pets because they are unique and interesting, but find out that the animal needs more time to become sociable than they are willing to spend. Hedgehogs will never meet you at the door with a wagging tail, the young hedgies are poop machines and then there are those quills. You'd think that fact they have quills might be a NO BRAINER but it isn't! So they have the animal for a month or so then get rid of it.
I know people who buy a new puppy more often than a new car! The puppy doesn't come house trained, he chews, he isn't walked, his behavior is out of control and then they get rid of him. But 6 months or so later, VIOLA there is a new ADORABLE baby animal of some kind. People like this drive me crazy. My mom raised us to belive that a pet is part of the family FOREVER! That's how so many animals end up needing good homes. Disgusting. Sorry for the rant. It's a sore topic for me.

Same here. I can't believe anybody would be dumb enough to go out and buy a pet without researching about it, thinking about it, making sure they can take care of it, and making sure they want it, including the cons, not just the pros. Also when people buy others a pet for Christmas or a birthday. REALLY bad idea. Unless of course they were only buying it for them after the gift receiver had already gone through the things mentioned above.

I have to agree. I used to work with a woman who got a new pet practically every month. She would "trade out" her old pet after the novelty of having a new pet wore off. She even had a dog for three years, and then gave it away so she could get a puppy. I can't fathom giving up one of my pets to get a another one. To get a more "cute and cuddly" and younger one. I can't even think of what my life would be like without one of them. I just wouldn't even be an option for me.

That is really sad....and I agree with you, it is horrible that people think animals are disposable and can be casually returned or cast aside. It makes my heart ache to think of it.
I actually went to see Spikey at Stasi's THREE times, just to make sure I was up for the responsibility. Thank goodness Stasi was ok with that; the first visit Spikey was scared and just stayed curled up in my palm and I was totally nervous, too and had a crises in confidence. But in my heart I knew I wanted a hedgie, so I arranged for a second visit and it went really well--I stayed for over one hour holding him and getting to know him. Then the third visit, I picked him up and brought him to his new home. I know that people probably thought I was over-thinking it or being too responsible, but these are little living beings with souls and hearts and I just wanted to make sure I was up for the task.

I agree it's horrible people are willing to just give their pets up. But at the same time, it's how I've acquired the majority of my pets, so at least some good can come out of it.

Re:Exciting news - 2008/05/12 00:43
I bought my first hedgehog in the spring of 98 when I was living at home with my folks during the first half of college. I spent THREE months researching them before I got Bartleby. My dad remembered when we lived in another state, our neighbor's gerbils got out and bred with some field mice, then turned into this super rat that infested everyone's houses. They were super cute and almost impossible to get rid off. Dad thought hedgehogs are rodents and when I brought Bartleby home he said, "If that thing breaks out and breeds with the squirrels creating some super mutant spiked squirrel race you are outta here!"
Later I found out he checked on the hedgehog when I wasn't home and even asked Mom if the little guy was well cared for. Mom told him something like, "You WISH you had it as good as that hedgehog."
We still pick on Dad about his super mutant spiked squirrels. Though now he's cool with my hedgehog and this Christmas when they visited, he even held and petted Harley!
But back to the main point, some folks don't deserve pets and I encourage most people who want a hedgehog NOT to get one. If they still want one after hearing all their bad points, then we may have something, of course the big secret is there aren't many down sides to having a hedgie, except I wish they lived longer!

I agree Sara and also all potential owners should read the Hedgehog Primer as part of their research (which I did) so they can understand that these little hedgies need specialized care and understanding.
That is so cool about your dad. My mom sometimes asks about Spikey and how he is doing, which makes me really happy. He is my baby.

Yeah I am shameless. I refer to Harley as my quill kid. He just had his first experience with live (pet store) crickets today. He ate three than wanted to hide, he hated them jumping on him! So much for my tough little guy!
