First ever skin reaction to hedgie - 2008/05/10 18:13
We went to an exotic pet store today where we get crickets at a great price and saw that he had baby hedgies in. He let us handle them as he knows we have our own hedgie. They were very small, maybe 7wks old and two took a long time to unball but once they did they were fairly friendly.
However, afterwards when I washed my hands I noticed they were very red and blochy. This has never happened to me before even when handling hedgehogs at a much less 'reputable' pet store that has since closed.
Has that ever happened to anyone else? Have you ever handled a whole bunch of hedgies and not reacted then handled another one and reacted?
Granted, these babies REALLY need a bath, not to mention a nail clipping) as they had poop and pee all over them (they're all sharing one wheel, which the owner has switched from one with the grated bottom to a solid bottom after we mentioned something to him last time) and I'm not sure what shavings he was using but he seems to use the same shavings for all of his animals so I guess it could have been that too? We use pine and I've never had a problem.
