cod liver oil - 2008/05/13 08:11
I read that giving fish oil helps to keep hedgehog ear from tattering (does anyone know if that is true) and Peanut's ears look a little flaky. I gave her one of my omega-3 vitamin pills you know the kind in that rubbery case with the liquid fish oil inside. Is a whole pill too much? I can cut in in half and mix the oil with her food but she seemed like she enjoyed chomping it.

I actually don't have an answer to this question. Rather more questions. What about olive oil? I know giving olive oil to dogs can help with bowel movements and should not be given frequently. But is the same true with hedgehogs? And what kind of Omega-3 fatty acids should be supplemented to help with dry skin? How much? This is an issue that I've been trying to resolve. I'd like to add something to her food to help with the dry skin. Any thoughts?

My vet recommended adding Omega 3 fatty acids to the hedgies food. My advice is to buy the Omega 3 for pets at the pet store....as it has the dosing for animals and it eliminates guess work.

Julie, is there any particular brand that you would recommend? I looked at some of them, and I'm not sure which one to buy. They all kinda seem the same to me expect for some minor differences.

I didn't know they sold the Omega 3 in pet stores. I didn't even know there was Omega 3 for pets! What is it near (to find it in the stores)? Thanks

Re:cod liver oil - 2008/05/31 21:11
Well there are a bunch of different brands and types out there. Halo Vitaglow Dream Coat is good and it has measurements on the back for small critters. It is an oil. Another one I use is Naturvet Ultimate Skin and Coat Supplement and it is in a powder form. There are tons to choose from and you will have the most luck finding and comparing different brands on line.....
I give the Omega -3 to all my pets from hedgehogs to the cats to the dogs.

Thanks Julie. Do you order all your Omega-3 from the internet? Do you mind telling me which sites you order/find Omega-3 from? I wouldn't know where to look. Thank you. I would love to start using this a.s.a.p.

For tatty ears, use bag balm directly on the ears.

Bag balm does work great on tattered ears
Some of the cat foods now have omega 3 and 6 already added to them which is probably an easier way to get it into most hedgehogs.

Okay everyone feel free to kick my butt on this but I have to ask.
You are adding the oil to their diet, but shouldn’t they be getting all the fatty acids and such from their food? If your feed isn’t covering it maybe it’s time to switch? I am only saying this because adding supplements SOUNDS easy and like a good idea but I’m not sure it always it. I just went through a heck of a lot of medical crap and learned vitamins and supplements I was adding didn’t always do what I thought they did. And now I feel more comfortable with complete food (i.e. vitamins in my/my pet’s main diet) than adding things. I don’t mean their treats such as a piece of chicken, blue berries and mealies and such but oils, supplements, vitamins i.e. the chemically altered stuff. PLEASE REMEMBER: This is merely my opinion. I am NOT a breeder nor a vet.

Is is ok to occasionally give a hedgie a small piece of cooked wild alaskan salmon (no skin or bones)? I have only done this once and my hedgie liked it and there were no ill side effects i.e. green poop. Would that cover getting omega 3's?

I don't see why it would be a bad thing, unless of course your hedgie decides he LOVES the smell of fish and decides to annoit with it. ewww! That could be interesting!

Thank goodness that did not happen when I fed Spikey the salmon! I would have had to wipe him down or give him a bath if he annointed himself. It had been poached and was nice and soft. He gobbled it up and did not annoint. I was just wondering if every once in awhile I should give him some to cover the omega 3's. Since it did not hurt him, I think I will.

Good for Spikey...He's remembering his roots! Alaskan salmon is the best, and it's a fantastic treat food for the hedgies. Ok, you theoretically *could* make it a staple food - but it would get awfully expensive if you don't live in AK!

Hey Stasi... didn't you live in Alaska? Or was that Canada?

YUP! grew up in AK. ...and will, one day, retire there! We were there for 30+ years. You know that heat wave we just suffered through?? Well, my mom-in-law was happy to report it was in the low 50's there.

Same. Although a decrease in temperature would be a nice bonus.

Dang! Here in South Carolina, last week we were at 100+! Now it's been in the 90's. Harley is fully addicted to his beloved A/C. I don't know how those Civil War types made it through those summers in those outfits! My GOD! Why I could faint just thinking about it.
