Quills vs. Spines? - 2008/05/13 08:46 Okay...........I was originally told that hedgehogs have spines, not quills. So I wondering, which is it?
Thanks

Re:Quills vs. Spines? - 2008/05/13 09:46 My understanding is that quills are barbed and can be ejected. Spines are modified hairs. They are hard and pointy but not barbed and they behave like hair. Hedgehogs have spines. Porcupines have quills. (I think correct me if I am wrong) Becky

Re:Quills vs. Spines? - 2008/05/13 11:04 According to dictionary.com
spine: a stiff, pointed process or appendage on an animal, as a quill of a porcupine, or a sharp, bony ray in the fin of a fish.
quill: one of the hollow spines on a porcupine or hedgehog.

Wikipedia doesn't make it much clearer. It looks like they are used interchangeably.

Re:Quills vs. Spines? - 2008/05/13 11:51 As far as I know they are technically referred to as quills. Probably because they are pointed, hollow and have a round shaft. Also they can be shed.

Maybe that helps?
