huff-n-lunge at treats and sometimes kibbles - 2008/05/12 19:05 I was wondering if anybody else's hedgies do what I call the ''huff-and-lunge" when a treat is presented? Whenever I present a treat (i.e. a small piece of poached chicken or a small piece of banana...yes, that is right, banana), Spikey does something that I find silly and perplexing. He kindof huffs a la forehead quills and lunges towards the treat at the same time. I dont get it...I have never taken a treat away, so he does not need to worry about that. He always has leftover food in his bowl so I know he is not starving. It is funny to witness, actually. I dont know if he is just a really hearty eater....he seems to have a lot of enthusiasm for treats and chomps them with gusto! He is not fat and I dont do treats everyday. Is this normal?

He is a very silly hedgie but I love him. I just have to make sure my fingers move quickly when I present a treat or else

Re:huff-n-lunge at treats and sometimes kibbles - 2008/05/12 22:12 Peanut doesn't do quite that. But when I give her a mealworm usually on a plastic spoon or something else, she is so enthusiastic about it she often misses it completely. It's pretty funny. She also never balls up completely but today I put food in her bowl and then went to pick her up and she huffed and balled up. I was confused but then i saw her make a beeline for her food dish. Apparently she doesn't like me coming between her and her food. "No you can't get me. I'M HUNGRY! " Hedgehogs are VERY silly Becky

Re:huff-n-lunge at treats and sometimes kibbles - 2008/05/13 11:55 Hedgehogs are programed to eat live critters so Spikey is taking no chances when confronting his food. I've seen lots of hedgehogs do this. I think it's done so that if the food fights back, then their eyes are protected.

Re:huff-n-lunge at treats and sometimes kibbles - 2008/05/13 14:20 Thank you both for the feedback and validation. Sometimes I dont know what is normal, what is quirkiness, and what is unique to Spikey. A never ending learning curve LOL!
