Adopted a hog today... - 2008/05/14 21:31 She is albino, and very timid. She slowly sniffed around her new home for a while and then I pulled her out and put her in a blanket on my lap. She unrolled pretty quickly, but didn’t move much from there, and kept her quills at not quite down the whole time. We watched tv together for almost an hour and then I set her down in my designated hog play-area. She crawled into a box and is either sleeping or just hiding out.

I’m ready to be patient and slow with getting to know her, but does anyone have any other suggestions besides just setting her on my lap?

I’ll take some pictures later and put them up, she’s real sweet looking.

Re:Adopted a hog today... - 2008/05/14 22:39 Just keep trying to hold her. One thing that I did when I first got my baby was I would wear a sweatshirt and she would sleep and cuddle in the pockets. Also a good idea would be to keep the tv and lights low so that you do not scare her. I hope this helps and congrats on your new hedgie! http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

Re:Adopted a hog today... - 2008/05/15 06:44 It sounds like you are already doing great. Another suggestion would be to put a tee-shirt of yours that you have been wearing in the cage for your hedgie to snuggle in--that way your hedgie can get used to your scent. Just be careful about loose threads, which can pose a risk.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Re:Adopted a hog today... - 2008/05/15 08:14 I bet that is one lucky hedgie. To go from crappy owners to one like you is really special. You are doing exactly what I do with mine. I try to actually hold her in my hands too so she gets used to them and not just my lap. Giving her treats why you are holding her is a good idea too so she associates good things with being with you. Becky

Re:Adopted a hog today... - 2008/05/15 21:22 Hey! I took some pictures today. She was a little more social and a little more active during play this evening, so things are progressing slowly but surely!

Re:Adopted a hog today... - 2008/05/15 21:24 Whoops, didn't work, trying again:

Oh, and I still need a name. I'm thinking of Kes or Billana (both Star Trek names, yes)

Re:Adopted a hog today... - 2008/05/16 06:38 She is beautiful. I absolutely adore albinos - they are my favorite. Every albino I have owned has been a true sweetheart. Good luck with your pretty new girl Julie Pierce

Not my albino....she's a real biter. She lunges at you to bite. But you can't help but love her to death....she's so cute and friendly otherwise She also likes to pull at blankets and drag them towards her. And she likes to bite dogs. lol. They know now to stay away from her

Re:Adopted a hog today... - 2008/05/16 11:32 What a pretty hedgehog! I love the second picture most of all though, hedgehogs are so cute when they hide under things. Pets:
Timmy (M, neutered) and Smokey (F, spayed) the maine coon and something else rescue cats.
Aureus (Unknown, called He) the goldfish.
Pepper (F) and Briar (M) the hissing cockroaches.
4 Minnows, rescued from being live bait.
