Stupid question? - 2008/05/16 11:24
Okay, So I keep seeing pictures, and hearing about people playing with their hedgehogs when there's daylight out. I was under the impression that hedgehogs are primarily nocturnal, and so I feel bad if I take my hedgie out to play before she usually wakes up, because it seems to be that she just wants to sleep. I dunno. My boyfriend tells me that I shouldn't take her out, because it isn't "natural" but, I have to sleep before she would usually get up. Is sunlight really not good for them, or is he just insane?

...do you awake at night? (if you're a "day" creature)
...do you awake at day? (if you're a "night" creature)
Just let your hedgehogs awake in a day time to play with you often, they will change their behaviors. Yes it's nocturnal animal but it doesn't mean it can't live in a day time right? But only one thing we should concern is their eyes. Well...just don't let them see the sunlight too direct or flash from camera too much. That's it! (For me, I won't use flash with animals)....

I wouldn't feel bad. My hedgehog wakes up periodically on her own. I know because if there is food left from the night in the morning I usually leave it there and when I come home from work it is always gone. I play with peanut in the daytime during the weekends when I am home too. She doesn't seem to mind too much as long as the lights are dim. If you want to take yours out just to sleep on your belly under a blanket then you have to worry even less quality time snuggles AND she can sleep. It's just a win all around.

Well, I was kindof forced to wake my hedgie at 6pm to administer medications. He handled it just fine and once he was awake, he would start exploring a bit. At 8pm or 9pm I usually get my hedgie up and we spend time together--he usually snuggles on my lap.
When I would visit the breeder at 3pm (3 visits) the hedgies would be up and awake. So I think as long as they get time to sleep, getting them up a few times during the day/evening is ok.

I'm new to my hedgie, but I've been doing one snuggle playtime in the morning (her sleeping on my lap while I check my e-mail and such) and one active playtime before I go to bed. I have to wake her up for both, but it seems like a good routine.

thanks. that's the aftermath of nail clipping. She passed out in the towel in my lap. I looked down, and that's what I saw, so I had to take a picture of it

That is a great picture! So cute.
Okay technically hedgehogs are nocturnal. Yup they like to sleep ALL DAY and honestly between you and me, most of the night too. In fact Harley is asleep on my lap right now. BUT I get my hedgehog out when I want to see him. He may not be as happy to see me as I am him but I give him time to wake up and then he's fine.
Yeah yeah I am SOOOO bad but I haven't lost a hedgehog to daytime exposure yet. And I've taken them to the PARK in the day too! Harley loves the park. (We stay off the dog trails) and he uses it as a chance to poop on my boyfriend as often as possible... but not me! It's funny. One word of wisdom, if you take your pet outside during the day be VERY CAREFUL! Hedgehogs are small and it is possible for a big bird of prey or owl to carry them off. No lie.

oh oh off topic but funny story. When my boss first got her pug puppy, she took it to the park and all of a sudden a giant hawk swooped down and just barely missed it. A bird tried to eat her dog!!!

I have spotted hawks in my neighborhood and around my neighborhood; this is the main reason I will never take my hedgie on my back porch. My husband suggested we take Spikey on the deck and I said no way.

Re:Stupid question? - 2008/05/21 22:34
My mom lives near a large wooded area with GIANT birds of prey. When she first moved in one of the neighbors told us about the house at the end of the block. They had a chihuahua and a duck, both on leases staked out in the back yard. One day the duck disappeared leaving a torn rope behind and the DUMB IDIOTS put the dog out the next day and he suffered the SAME fate. The neighbor claimed to hear YIP YIP YIPPPPPPPPPPP..... (fades away)
So yeah birds of prey can and will nab a small animal and you should always be careful as a hawk can snatch something right in front of you. I wouldn't lose sleep over this issue but it's a good thing to know. After all your hedgehog is more likely to steal your credit card and order a mealie worm pizza than he is to be carried off.... naughty hedgepig!

Re:Stupid question? - 2008/05/21 23:29
Well, it's a good thing that there aren't a lot of birds of prey near my house, and there are quite a few trees, and buildings to help shelter my hedgie and I. Everytime that i've taken her outside, it's freaked her out a little, and she just hides in my arms or shirt....
