Henderson,NZ:"Albino getting dose of the Good Oil" - 2006/01/23 21:47 http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,3549290a11,00.html

RARE FIND: An albino hedgehog was found in Henderson and is being nursed back to health.

Albino getting dose of the good oil
24 January 2006

By RANI TIMOTI

A white hedgehog with pink eyes is slowly growing back its prickles after being found in Henderson suffering from mange.

The placid albino female is recuperating at the home of Wildcare coordinator Lyn Macdonald, who is dishing out dollops of baby oil for the skin disease and feeding her loads of cat food.

It is the first white hedgehog Ms Macdonald has had in more than 20 years of looking after birds and animals in Henderson.

"There are not many of them around," she says. "I didn't know we had white ones here. The last I heard of them was in Tauranga."

Ms Macdonald is still deciding where to release the hedgehog once it gets back to full health.

It is just one of a number of animal patients resting up on her property after being rescued.

Others include blue penguins from the west coast, some ducks and a number of swallows.

Re:Henderson,NZ:"Albino getting dose of the Good Oil" - 2006/02/21 01:41 Poor little man. Vitamin E can work miracles in getting quills to re-grow after a bad mite infestation. I have had excellent results using it on rescues. www.hedgeboken.com

Re:Henderson,NZ:"Albino getting dose of the Good Oil" - 2006/02/21 17:22 Poor guy with the bald butt. How undignified. And look at his nails, egads! It is a good picture of how to scruff one of these guys, but I don't think it's nice considering how much his skin looks like it hurts.

I do think it is funny to think of an albino as a rare find. Any hedgehog would be a rare find just wandering around in North America, but heck, most everyone I know who owns hedgehogs seems to have at least one albino. The three breeders here in Idaho all breed albinos, so it doesn't seem so rare to me. Hedgie hugs...Tiffany

Re:Henderson,NZ:"Albino getting dose of the Good O - 2006/02/21 20:57 Henderson NZ.... I assume that is New Zealand? Which would put this as a wild European type hedgehog, not a pet hedgehog.

Re:Henderson,NZ: - 2006/05/01 17:09 The condition must be caused by mites or someething else because the hogs transported to Newzealand had no fleas, lucky hogs but this one seems to have suffered.
