Litter Pan Recommendations - 2006/02/14 02:16 I just got my hedgie(Paddington)on Saturday. I put a small cover to a kid's shoe box in his cage and he did his business in it. So, I'm looking for something a bit more durable and washable. What does everyone else use? I'm looking for something small. Thanks!

Re:Litter Pan Recommendations - 2006/02/14 04:16 So glad that litter training seems to be working for you!
I would look into the storage section at Wal-Mart (or your other preferred variety store with a good storage section). There are many shapes and sizes of tupperware and etc. containers, maybe you could find one that would be suitable.

Re:Litter Pan Recommendations - 2006/02/14 18:40 Good boy Paddington!

As far as a small litter box, maybe try a lid to a tupperware container. I don't litter box train, so I don't really have any ideas.

Re:Litter Pan Recommendations - 2006/02/17 17:40 Everyone I know recommends a shallow 8x4" disposable baking tray. After searching everywhere, I finally gave up on finding them. I went to the fishing section of WalMart and basically bought a craft box that was the perfect size to fit under Jasira's wheel. I didn't go to the craft section because the same craft box would have costed $3 more. I used an exacto knife to carefully cut the plastic lid off the box. It slides perfectly under her wheel, which is also where she does her business, and is filled with plain white paper towels. I'm considering trying puppy pads instead of paper towels, but am nervous I'll find her wrapped up like a mummy one morning in it. The paper towels work great & she ignores them. I love the plastic lid because I use a cloth liner and it really helps keep them clean. Hedgie hugs...Tiffany

Re:Litter Pan Recommendations - 2006/05/10 12:29 Has anyone tried one of the corner boxes they sell?? Was curious how well they may work...Elvis I think would benefit from a box as he buries all his poops, so now I have to go poop diving for a living.

Re:Litter Pan Recommendations - 2006/05/10 21:16 I tried a corner box once, but I think it was too small, and Kumquat pretty much just ignored it. If you get one big enough that he can fit his entire body in it though (like rabbit size), it might work.

Right now I have Kumquat's wheel at the short end of his tub, and I just fill the whole area behind the wheel with Yesterday's News litter. He likes it I think because it's a little secluded, and he goes in the litter almost exclusively.

Good luck!

Re:Litter Pan Recommendations - 2006/05/11 12:28 What kind of tub did you use...that is a great idea?

Re:Litter Pan Recommendations - 2006/05/12 08:18 I just mean the regular Sterilite tub that I use for his house (~18"x32"x12"). I have the wheel on the short end, a few inches in from the side, and the last several inches of the tub floor is just litter rather than woodchips like the rest. He pretty much favors one corner too, which makes it even easier. It's pretty easy to just scoop out the messes, because the litter is really not deep. Works for me!

I have one. It's a perfectly good waste of money. They're too small for a hedgehog and because of the design, they end up taking up a lot of room in a cage. At least it seemed that way to me. I've seen people suggest buying the big ferret litter box, but that would make the cage really crowded and I'd have to pull out her PVC pipe or wheel and she'd throw a stinky hissy if I ever attempted that!

Re:Litter Pan Recommendations - 2006/06/03 17:57 I use long, narrow plastic containers and cut out an opening with a box cutter. This way the sides are taller and any rolling around catches the litter and keeps it inside the litter box where it should be.
