water bottle - 2005/03/09 20:49 Hi, we've just gotten two hedgehogs and I have a question. They both keep biting at the water bottle instead of licking at it. Is this right? I'm not sure if they're getting water that way so sometimes we'll squeeze the bottle some to make sure they're getting water out of it! Thanks

Re:water bottle - 2005/03/10 03:31 Have they ever had water bottles before? Hedgehogs can chip teeth on water bottles and also their necks do not articulate like other small animals so therefore drinking from a bottle is not natural for them. Maybe try giving them a bowl instead.

Re:water bottle - 2005/03/10 03:57 I agree with Nancy, you might want to try a water bowl instead of the water bottle. Water bottles, the hedgehogs do tend to bite most of the time, if they dont really know how to use it. If you watch the bottle, you'll see bubbles and that means that they're getting water. They're suppose to lick it, with more practice Im sure they will do that. As Nancy said, bottles can make them chip their teeth when they bite them, and their teeth do not grow back, so you have to be careful. If your not sure they're getting any water, watch when they drink from the water bottles and afterwards put a water bowl in to make sure they're getting water. If they drink a lot from the bowl, they probably aren't getting much from the bottle. Let us know how it goes :o)

Re:water bottle - 2005/03/11 02:02 Thank you for answering-- when i got them at the pet store last Saturday, they told me they needed a water bottle so i assumed that was what they were used to. They also gave me a book about hedgehogs and it said water bottles were best because if you used a bowl, they'd just fill it up with their bedding/shavings. I'm going to continue to do as ya'll suggested and see if the water level goes down and watch for the bubbles. I just thought it was strange how both of them just bit at it like that! I'm also giving them a small bowl of water for when we take them out to play just to be safe! Thanks again.

Re:water bottle - 2005/07/15 07:35 My hedgehog has a pretty easy time getting water, and seems to understand it most of the time, but she does bite it, at least twice in each round of drinking. I have attempted aa bowl, but she has never used one and doesn't seem to understand that going nose first isn't a good idea. For the moment I am still on the bottle and she seems okay, though I do worry.

Re:water bottle - 2005/07/16 08:12 I use bottle and there is a type out that has a small lever to push. This is the bottle with the flip top lid. '

There is a small, non-scientific study and more hedgies with mouth cancer used a water bowl. This could be due to toxins in the bowls leaching into the water though. I have heard the ceramic bowls with the blue paint are not safe but I see them for sale everywhere.

Re:water bottle - 2005/07/17 05:55 After reading this post, I decided to offer Morrow both a water bottle and bowl. It took her a good while to understand how a bowl works (as mentioned above) but now that she has it down she prefers the bowl. No contest. I think with at least the design of bottle I have, she got little water with each lick, so she prefers the amount she can get with a bowl. She keeps it clean for the most part, just the occasional bedding that I guess she must acidentally deposit as she gets her legs up there, slips in.

Re:water bottle - 2005/07/17 17:21 Good for you! It is a personal decision and you went with what works best for you and your hedgie. This is the right way to make a decision.
