heat issues - 2006/09/22 15:32 Hello! Recently we have gone into a real sudden temperature drop in my area. Way before what I figured the temperature at this time of year would be. I have a thermometer in the little ones cage and while the temperature one night even dropped to 67 degree's, he hasn't changed in the least. The temperature in the area is warming up and I have a microwaveable pad for him to sit on(though he seems to dislike the smell). In his cage he has a system of PVC pipes, a pigloo, and a bed with my shirt ontop(his favorite place to sleep, next to a PVC entrance). When I use the microwaveable bag he hides in the PVC next to the bag so I think he still gets the heat since the shirt traps it down.

My real question is that this weekend I am definently getting him a warming device. But should I get him a space heater(its a very small room, VERY!) or a reptile heating pad? The advantage of the pad is he can get away from the heat since it won't be on the the whole bottom. The disadvantage is that it doesn't warm the whole place to the desired temperature. What do you all think? I get so worried when I see the temp drop below 80, I put in a second shirt and cover half the cage close to a window with my jacket(actually, he gets the jacket and I don't get to wear one when I go from class to class ), but he doesn't miss a beat. It's like noise, supposedly hedgehogs hate noise, he doesn't like it only when he's out of his cage. Otherwise my roommate blare music in other rooms and he's running away, eating, or napping it off as if it was 10 decibels instead of 100... wish I could do that... we had construction nearby last night and he's the only one in the house that got any sleep.

Re:heat issues - 2007/04/11 03:15 I'd opt for the heating pad, that way he can decide where he wants to go for the amount of heat that he wants. Jessica

Re:heat issues - 2007/04/11 11:40 I agree, a heating pad is probably the best answer. I use several of them with my hedgies and I love them, they love them. If you are having a cold evening they can use them and if the weather is warmer they can move to another part of the cage where there is no heat. When I notice they are warm, I turn it off until I think the weather is changing again. The cost is pennies to keep them warm.
