Nesting, but not pregnant - 2004/10/30 23:16
Is it normal to have non pregnant females nesting? Loribelle is a fiend at building her nest up, constantly..

I have definately seen it here in non-pregnant girls. I am not going to say it is NORMAL, thus, something that most females should be expected to do, but it isn't horribly unusual either. I have a couple of girls here who can be put in a freshly cleaned cage with an empty pigloo, and have the cage emptied of bedding within 20 minutes, and the pigloo filled so full they can barely wedge themselves into it. I've seen a few non-pregnant girls exhibit nesting behavior, as well. I guess they are just 'playing house'. LOL! =)

Since I am relatively new I am not sure what you mean by nesting but I am taking it to mean the hog is dragging stuff into the nest box and making a nest much like a hamster or my skunks do. My male, Taino nests.

I was actually going to post something about this myself. Hester Sue is 3 and a half months old, and the other day she started carrying her toilet paper rolls around instead of just jamming her head into them and being a freak, she was also carrying shavings into her log house and then she jammed herself and both her rolls in there and went to sleep. I'm thinking that is nesting, I just thought maybe she was in her first heat and that's why she was doing it. Is she too young to be having her first heat? Do they nest when they are in heat? Is she going to do this often?

Re:Nesting, but not pregnant - 2004/12/04 05:21
Hedgehogs don't really come into "heat" like most animals do. They start cycling when exposed to a male, so they don't have to come into heat to attract males. I have noticed that if the temps or the barometric pressures drop, my non-pregnant girls nest a lot more, so it may be a weather related issue. Is there ANY chance that Hester Sue was with a male before you got her? Becca

I don't think there is a chance, I know she was caged with her sister at the store, but I will definately check and see if there is any chance. She has since stopped doing that. But I will still check, she's too young to be pregnant isn't she? Our weather did get a lot colder recently and winter (if you can call what we have here winter) seems to have hit overnight.

It is a possibility that she is pregnant, though doubtful. There have been females that have gotten pregnant as young as 7 or 8 weeks old, which is why it is SUPER important that litters should be seperated by sex promptly at weaning. Becca
