Trying to get Chantilly to eat!! - 2006/10/12 23:36 I have a beautiful new snow named Chantilly that is being a real stinker about eating. I have tried everything short of feeding her with a syringe. So far I have tried, adding scrambled eggs, adding chicken, adding watermelon pieces, adding meal worms, giving her boost, giving her Asbiliac formula - to no avail. Last night I gave her 35 counted out pieces of kibble and 7 waxworms. This morning I had 29 pieces of kibble and 7 waxworms - I was not real impressed.
She is very very shy and its all I can do to get her to unroll so I am afraid the syringe feeding wont help our bonding (she will definitely hate me then) but on the other hand I am really concerned about her not eating.

Suggestions????

Thanks,
Julie

Re:Trying to get Chantilly to eat!! - 2006/10/13 00:01 6 pieces of kibble isn't bad for her size. Think about it, her tummy is a little bigger then the size of a gumball. I am surprized that she is snubbing the wax worms and mealies.

What foods are in your mix? In the mean time, try giving her about 10 kibbles and sprinkling some garlic powder or oil on it.

Re:Trying to get Chantilly to eat!! - 2006/10/13 00:26 I was going to ask also what was in her mix. Did you switch her suddenly from the mix she was eating at the breeder's to something else?

How long have you had her again? Lucy didn't eat a lot when I first brought her home.

My Lucy is not a huge fan of treats. I really can't get her to eat much else other than her kibble. And if she eats too many mealworms, she gets an upset tummy.

When I first brought her home from the breeder's, she was eating Spike's Delight. I kept her on that for the first couple of weeks until she got used to just being in a new place, then I slowly started to change her food over to what I wanted her to be on permanently at my house. I didn't actually even offer her anything else until I had her on her regular kibble for awhile. Maybe she's just confused right now.

I think as long as she's eating something, that is encouraging.

Re:Trying to get Chantilly to eat!! - 2006/10/13 01:15 Hi guys,
I havent counted again but more kibble is gone. I think maybe I am just comparing her to some of my other hedgies that eat like hogs (pun intended). I am used to seeing at least 1/2 a bowl of kibble and goodies gone by morning.

I have only had her a couple of weeks and the food I am feeding her probably not the same mix as what she had previously. My guys are on Purina Pro Plan Weight Management, Purina Pro Plan Indoor Care and Purina Pro Senior and of course a variety of nightly goodies usually scrambled eggs, melon, turkey or chicken etc... and of course when my 500 meal worms arrive they will be added to the diet too (shivers....yuck).

She is pooping, drinking, running like crazy on her wheel so maybe I am overreacting??

Re:Trying to get Chantilly to eat!! - 2006/10/13 01:20 It sounds to me like if she's pooping, drinking (peeing then), and running on her wheel, then would be doing okay.

She might just not have a big appetite. A petite hog!

Re:Trying to get Chantilly to eat!! - 2006/10/13 15:34 Hey-stop talking about me that way

My suggestions-Stop counting kibble-it will make you crazy!

If you're into Purina, try the kitten chow. She may like the smaller size of the kibble. Or chop up what you have in a blender, grinder, etc.

She may just be a picky eater so if she is eating something stick with that for now and add other stuff gradually. One of mine was so picky it would take months for her to accept a new food. Talk about driving you crazy!

Re:Trying to get Chantilly to eat!! - 2006/10/14 00:26 Ok I promise to stop counting kibble and wax worms! I did weigh her yesterday and everyone else while I was at it just to see if she gains weight.
Am I getting compulsive? counting food and weighing hedgies? Ordering 500 yucky meal worms!!!! ARRGHHHH (running around in panicked circles)

Re:Trying to get Chantilly to eat!! - 2006/10/14 16:04 If you're getting compulsive, I'm right there with you.

I've had to weigh mine from time to time if I think they have food issues. I've had the best luck with weighing them once or twice a week. Every day is too much information to obsess over-sort of like counting kibble.

Weigh them at the same time of day so you're not comparing pre and post poop weights. They can poop out 10, 20, even 30 grams. I learned that the hard way after one particularly scary vet visit.

And if she's a youngster, slow but steady weight gain with the occasional growth spurt is good.

And we know we have Kelly to whip us all into shape if we start getting too compulsive!

Re:Trying to get Chantilly to eat!! - 2006/10/14 17:09 Yes I dont want to get crazy about the weights. I weighed them all on Thursday so I will check them again this Thursday and see how she is doing.
It was interesting to see where they all fell as far as weights...I had a range from 222 grams to 565 grams! We'll see how they do this week. Thanks everyone!!

Re:Trying to get Chantilly to eat!! - 2006/10/20 13:29 Herbie did not eat much when he first came home either. Probably around 10 kibbles a night and he still only eats about a tablespoon of food per day. Full grown and weighs about 230 grams. Snow, on the other hand, eats at least two tablespoons of kibble mix and two mealies per day. I feed Herbie two tablespoons of kibble so he has plenty but he always has about half left over. Snow gets three tablespoons and he eats most of it. Cyn and Hedgie Boys

Re:Trying to get Chantilly to eat!! - 2006/10/20 13:51 Just wanted to let everyone know that Chantilly is doing much better. She is eating very well and is gaining weight at a nice rate. She is funny little hog though - she won't eat any wax worms, chicken, watermelon, eggs, etc that I usually give my kids in addition to their kibble. She is strictly a kibble girl.
Of course now that I have my lovely meal worm farm that might change
