Brushing Teeth - 2005/05/06 04:35 When I had the vet out for my vet inspection, Vet of Record stuff, he mentioned that his small animal handbook recommended brushing hedgie teeth. Anyone else ever get told this?

Re:Brushing Teeth - 2005/05/09 06:39 Yep. I even know how to do it. Cover your finger with chicken flavored toothpaste. Stick finger in front of hedgehog's nose. Try not to scream as they brush their teeth with the tendons and ligaments in your finger.

For those of you who don't know that I have a sick sense of humor, I am KIDDING! Please don't try this, and if you do, don't blame me.

Re:Brushing Teeth - 2005/05/10 10:07 LOL, I was thinking the little rubber finger cover would not be helpful. The vet mentioned a q-tip but I am afraid that cotton would get wrapped all around pointy teeth. This of course would require me to go after it and then we would be back to the hedgie brushing his or her teeth on my tendons and ligaments...BAD HEDGIE!

Re:Brushing Teeth - 2005/10/01 10:03 Back when hedgies were first imported and raised, it was a really common problem for them to lose their teeth early, so around mid-90's, it was promoted that owners should brush their teeth. Unfortunately, the hedgies were not so thrilled about the idea, but fortunately, the incidence seems to have decreased over the last decade (I haven't had a toothless one in over a year, and it used to be more like 1 in 10 would lose teeth or wear down their teeth and require soft food). =)

Re:Brushing Teeth - 2005/10/01 20:14 Dry crunchy foods (like cat crunchies) scratch against the teeth had help to remove some of the tartar build up.

Also, do not feed you hedgehog too much wet cat food, as that will promote tooth decay. Kelly Sosik-Hamor

Re:Brushing Teeth - 2005/11/23 14:47 I'm guessing the food we feed them today is a lot better formulated for them as well. We know not to buy the "hedgehog" food but rather mixes of cat foods. Also a side thought could the teeth falling out be due to a lack of calcium in early diets?

i know you posted this awhile ago, i just joined and was looking aroung the site. my old hedgehog had a tumor in her upper jaw...orginally the vet thought that it was gingivitous and he gave me a kit to brush her teeth with. it came with some "meaty" flavore toothpaste and a little finger brush to brush her teeth with. its is EXTREMLY difficult to brush their teeth, so i would not do it unless you absolutly want to..but i'm not a hedgehog expert or anythng.
