Tiggy tried to bite me :( - 2005/06/10 05:48 I was sitting having quiet time with my new hedgie.. and she chomped down on my gloved hand. I am very thankful that it was the gloved hand and not the hand that was gently petting her! I have had her for a week now, and I know she is still getting used to me. Is this a bad sign? I held her for another few minutes, with no petting, and then put her in her cage. She started running on her wheel while I was still right next to the cage, which I thought was a good sign. Any help would be appreciated very much. Eileen (sunflower)

Re:Tiggy tried to bite me :( - 2005/06/10 16:56 Can I ask why you are wearing gloves while you are holding her? Gloves usually aren't necessary, and are not at all recommended unless it IS really necessary. If the glove was leather, it doesn't surprise me at all that she bit at it. The smell of leather is very tempting to almost every animal that has any predatory instincts behind them. Sounds like you did the right thing though, not putting her back in the cage as soon as she bit.

Re:Tiggy tried to bite me :( - 2005/06/11 01:00 I read in a book that you should wear gloves while picking up your hedgehog. I take off the gloves while she is in my lap, but I wear gloves while moving her in and out of her cage. They are leather.. I guess that explains that! Tonight she was very huffy, but I did get her to eat a little bit of baby food (peas) off of a spoon that I was holding with a bare hand.

Re:Tiggy tried to bite me :( - 2005/06/13 15:41 Must have been one of the older books. The hedgehogs that were originally iported and the offspring of them DID need gloves for easy handling, because they were VERY unpleasant to work with for the most part. I personally recommend not using gloves at all with your hedgehog, except in extreme cases. If you have a hard time picking her up from her cage, give her a small blanket that she can snuggle in and you can use for scooping her out of her cage.

Re:Tiggy tried to bite me :( - 2005/06/14 07:00 I read that you should not breed pet store hedgehogs. My hedgie is from a pet store, and I know she was born there. If there were something wrong with her, would it be obvious? I had no idea that there were breeders out there, I wish I had investigated more thoroughly before buying. (not that I would trade this little lump of joy for another hedgie) I am trying the no gloves, and she is responding to my hand.

Re:Tiggy tried to bite me :( - 2005/06/14 17:03 There isn't necessarily going to be anything wrong with her, but sadly, since she comes from who only knows background, it can increase her chances of developing a genetic illness such as WHS or any other genetic issue. We all hope that there will be nothing wrong with her, and she will live a long healthy life. Good luck with the no-gloves, hopefully she responds favorably for you.
