Feeding? - 2006/12/13 13:44 Hello, I have a question about feeding. Is it best to always have their food bowl full, or would it be better to do feeding in intervals such as twice a day?

Re:Feeding? - 2006/12/13 14:29 I personally am a huge fan of keeping dry food constantly available for a hedgehog. I fill their bowls, and make sure that they don't become empty.

Re:Feeding? - 2006/12/13 17:30 Yes, I definetely agree with keeping it full. Caramel loves to snack every couple of hours. And then one of the babies almost lives in the food bowl !

Re:Feeding? - 2006/12/14 01:41 I would make sure that you have a well-rounded diet. Check out the "Food and Supplements" area for more information on that.

If they have a wheel and use it, most of them will not become obese.

Re:Feeding? - 2006/12/14 13:34 I keep food in my boys food bowls 24/7 because they each have different snack times. Neither of my boys is obese but they use their wheels regularly and I use all high protein low fat foods. I have found that about two tablespoons of food is a good amount for their bowls as they never finish it all in 24 hours. Cyn and Hedgie Boys

Re:Feeding? - 2006/12/14 16:59 As said by other posters, if you have a good healthy diet, and the hedgehog has access to plenty of exercise, MOST hedgehogs will not become obese. Some hedgehogs, like humans, are automatically inclined to become.. um... more curvy than others. If your hedgehog DOES become especially overweight, then you can consider providing small frequent feedings, but I would recommend finding a way to get some pictures of your hedgehog to post if you think they are getting obese, we would be glad to share our opinions, and any necessary weight loss steps.

Re:Feeding? - 2006/12/14 20:39 Yeah if your hedgie can not completely ball up (tuck head and all limbs completely in) and instead is semi rolled with fat pockets around his arms and chin -then he is obese. They should always be able to ball up tightly -so that makes it a pretty easy test. Julie Pierce

Re:Feeding? - 2007/03/31 20:10 ~Im a NEW Pog mom and my q is similiar. I KEEP the bowl full but my baby is only 8 weeks old...how much should she be eating, and if I keep a full bowl how do I tell if she is eating enough, how much she is eating etc?~

~Also my girl has only been home 2 days but last night I noticed she had GREEN poopie. Can that be from stress or maybe food? I feed her 3 different kinds of cat food.~

~Im going to Petsmart tomorrow to get some other items for her. What treats etc do Hedgies PREFER. I read Mealworms. Can I get them from Petsmart? Also what else does your hedgies tend to like?~

Re:Feeding? - 2007/03/31 20:52 My babies are 4 ish weeks and have started easting groundup and moistened food which I put in a seaparate bowl away from the mom's bowl. The problem is the mom seems to be eating it all even though her own bowl is full. This aso happened when the bowls were together. If I ony feed them when they are out, will that be ok until they are weaned? Any suggestions?
Thanks.,

Re:Feeding? - 2007/03/31 23:54 Put more in the bowl and let mom eat it too. She' working hard to raise those babies and she deserves a treat/ extra nutrition. Besides, the babies will see what she is doing and mimic her behavior.
