Smelly poop - 2005/06/26 04:23 Hey,

I just got my first hedgie and love him tremendously. Only problem is, his poop smells absolutely horrible. I'm in a little one-bedroom place so the stench really spreads everywhere. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions about different foods or supplements I could try that would maybe make it smell better. He seems to be in excellent health so I don't suspect any problems. Right now I have him on a mix of 8-in-1 Hedgehog Food and Chicken Soup For the Cat Lover's Soul Adult food. From everything I've read, these are both pretty high-quality good foods... but they're producing a terrible odor! He also gets occasional mealworm treats.

Please let me know if you have suggestions... and if not about food, maybe someone has ideas about air fresheners or odor reducers that are safe to use around my hedgie?

Thanks!

Re:Smelly poop - 2005/06/27 04:07 First of all, if you just got him, and these are different foods than he is used to, a slightly upset stomach can GREATLY increase the smell of the poops produced. Do you know what foods he was on before you got him? Can you get a little of it to help him adjust over to the new ones easier?
Secondly, some foods are worse about poop odor than others. Brisky's is royally foul smelling poops. L'Avian can be pretty raunchy at first also. While I haven't ever noticed the raunch factor from 8 in 1, it could be related. Try switching him to just the CSFTCLS for a couple of days and see if that helps.
Also, is the poop smell strong just when he... um... makes a deposit, or all the time? If it is all the time, I would switch to a different bedding that is more absorbent. That will help suck the moisture out of the poop quicker so the smell goes away.

Re:Smelly poop - 2005/06/27 19:37 Thanks, Becca. I've had him for about 4 weeks, so he should be used to the food by now. At first, I did give him a little bit of his old food mixed in with it. The problem is really just when he makes the poop; once it gets absorbed in the bedding and dries out it doesn't stink so much. Unfortunately it doesn't get absorbed and stays pretty smelly on the wheel (which I clean every day and sometimes twice a day, but still, he runs on it a lot!).

Re:Smelly poop - 2005/06/30 08:04 At least you know he feels ok if he runs enough to have you cleaning the wheel twice a day.
