Balls??? - 2007/03/07 09:31 Does anyone suggest these balls for their hedgies?:

http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C% 3Eprd_id=845524441776929&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302047891&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023695&bmUID=1173280787871

I would think that their little nails would get stuck in the air holes...do they? I would love to get one for Piper to run around outside with me on her own without me on top of her...I would of course be watching her but i would not have to be to close to her as I have a closed in yard.

Re:Balls??? - 2007/03/07 10:34 Some hedgehogs LOVE their balls and will learn the layout of their space quite quickly. I've not had/heard of an issue with nails getting stuck as long as they're kept reasonably short.
The hedgehogs definitely need the giant exercise balls, they don't do well in the small ones.

Re:Balls??? - 2007/03/07 11:07 yup, they work great. I've never seen a hedgehog get a foot stuck (although keeping nails trimmed is suggested, mainly for comfort).

Get the size up from hamster. They can go the biggest size as well, but it is a little overkill.

Re:Balls??? - 2007/03/07 11:56 The one i was counting on getting was the 12 inch ferret ball..is that a reasonable size? Should it be bigger? My last hedgie when I was 6 I had him (RIP Sonic the hedgehog) and I had him a 12 inch ball and he did just fine. I didnt know what I do now about hedgies but I still loved him and by reading everything I did almost everything right..except for the wheel...but he still loved it. I miss him..

Re:Balls??? - 2007/03/08 21:41 When we had Rambo he LOVED THE CRITTER BALL, we should have called him Eveready for he just kept going. Pippi is not so enthused... so i put it on the couch and she crawls in and out of it and seems to enjoy that so much more than traveling. TAPE THE DOOR ON especially if you are going to put them outside in it... imagine your horror to find an empty critter ball! That is the only time Rambo ever escaped is when the door came loose, luckily we were inside and he beelined under the nearest piece of furniture. So now each time I do put Pippi in it I have four pieces of tape to hold the door in place (it gets a little warped after awhile). I use blue painters tape for almost everything, easy to lift but holds well. Neither has ever gotten their feet or nails stuck, but they do poop of pee the minute they start to travel.

Re:Balls??? - 2007/03/09 19:49 Running balls are lots of fun but remember to leave time for the inevitable dirty job of a foot bath and cleaning all the poop out of the ball!!! Running in the ball stimulates their digestive system as does running in their running wheel so they poop like crazy when they are in it and it can be a big mess to clean. Julie Pierce

Re:Balls??? - 2007/03/10 08:14 a poopy ball is a happy ball in my house, poop on the wheel tells me she's eating and that is a good thing. I'm will sometimes go into a tank with a tissue and lift out a stray and tell Pippi what a good girl she is. It's not the poop its the pee that requires the ball or wheel be rinsed out in the shower daily for that is what normally stinks in their house (am not crazy about pee being strewn thru the house as she goes around in the critter ball, when I see that starting I pick up the ball and put her right into the tub to finish her business!
