What CAN'T hedgies eat? - 2005/07/23 20:00 Does anyone know what kinds of food hedgehogs just absolutely cannot have? Or just any foods you do not recommend for them? I want to let Nano try some new things, but I'm afraid I might accidentally feed him something that'll be detrimental to his health... Thanks!

Re:What CAN'T hedgies eat? - 2005/07/24 03:19 No dairy products, because they can cause massive stomach upset and runny poops. Exceptions are yogurt, cottage cheese, and hard cheeses, because they have been broken down partially by enzymes in the processing. This doesn't mean that they are good in large quantities though.
No peanuts or IMO, any other nuts. These can get stuck in the roof of the mouth, and cause pain, infection, and inability to eat normally
No dried fruits (including raisins) or anything else sticky or gummy. These can get caught in the teeth, and cause pain or tooth decay.
Be VERY careful and most likely avoid avocados, chocolate, and onions. While there isn't any definate proof that they are a problem for hedgehogs, they are dangerous for some other species, and should be treated with extreme care just in case.
That is what I can think of at the moment.... maybe someone else will think of something I have missed.
