Help! Litter Training - 2007/03/29 16:54 I recently got my guy and was wondering how to train him to go poop in the litter tray? Every morning the poop is everywhere!!- wheel, blanket, food,... I have heard you can do this. Any advice? Alessandra Gutierrez

Re:Help! Litter Training - 2007/03/29 20:18 Not all hedgies will use a litter pan reliably. Some will use it all the time, some maybe 50% of the time and some just dont care at all - its an individual thing.
If you want to try litter training get a pan that they can get in and out of easily. Line it with a paper towel and put it under the running wheel. You can also scoop a couple of poops into the litter pan so he gets the idea (hopefully).
As far as pooping in his food, there are nice bowls out now that are dome shaped (covered with an opening in the middle). They cant get inside these to poop. Good luck!

Re:Help! Litter Training - 2007/03/30 01:07 What kind of food are you feeding? Sometimes hedgehogs will poop in the food if they don't like it. Brisky's is great for litterbox training as is Pretty Pets and Vitacraft (I'm just kidding.... kinda..... but you should never feed any of those to your hedgehogs). You can also try a smaller dish. Some hedgehogs will jump in the bigger dishes to eat, and if they happen to have to poop.....

As for the litterbox training, Julie covered it well. Your hedgehog will always poop in the wheel. They just do; cleaning wheels is a major part of owning hedgehogs. I don't bother with litter training. I find that a single hedgehog doesn't make a lot of mess. A weekly cage cleaning, and some spot cleaning in between is more then adequate.
