Niece wanted me to replace pet rabbit, I wanted something that didn't poop so much. Saw pet store ad for hedgehogs, did some internet research and came across supply person Vicki in Chicago - called her and she answered my questions. Went and bought one the next day from local pet store - he was the most active of the four so we called him Rambo short for Rambunctious. Did not realize he had liver disease (we all learn the hard way), he died six weeks later. Was seriously hooked on hedgehogs and was devastated, wanting to fill that hole in my heart. I advertised on this site 'looking for a breeder near Albany or Saratoga'. Ann at Connecticut Hedgehogs responded, she was only two hours away as opposed to four hours to Buffalo. Won a Chili Cook-off that morning and that afternoon we went and got our little girl Pippi I miss you my sweet baby girl!

Re:HEY MEMBERS!!!!!!!!! - 2007/04/26 12:18 Hello! I am Cedar. I live in Santa Fe, NM (yes – the Southwest!) I am an artist (you can see some of my work at www.cedarsilverfox.com – there’s no hedgehog art up there yet, but soon). I hold the “someday” dream of becoming a breeder, after I learn a whole lot, but as of March 31, 2007 I have had just one PO’ed ball of Prickles named Harold whom I am totally obsessed with.

I’ve always loved hedgehogs, never knew one, but when someone emailed me a photo of three baby hedgehogs I was inspired to call the pet store. I knew I wasn’t going to get a baby as young as in the picture, but I really wasn’t expecting to get a 3-yr-old. Alas, the Universe had a better idea. (I’ve since learned that going to breeders is better, but if I’d known that I wouldn’t have Harold, so I am glad for that ignorance.)

Harold had been returned to the pet store because he was so unfriendly, and was stuck in a room full of screeching birds, trying desperately to drive off anyone who came close. I tried to find a home for him with someone who had experience with hedgies, thinking that was what he needed, but when nobody came forward, I knew I had to offer him sanctuary, even knowing he may never be a cuddly and affectionate pet.

He’s calmed considerably in the quiet peace of my home. Slowly I am establishing trust – we’ve had ups & downs but more ups. My theory is that the only power he has known is that of fear and anger and defense, and I am never going to teach him to trust me by trying to take that power away from him (not that I could).

I don’t generally think of myself as a patient person, but am finding with him that I am more patient than he is angry, and I have some hope that someday I will hear his happy noises. Even PO’d I find him the absolute most adorable thing on the planet, and I am amazed at the charisma and personality he exhibits. Yes, I am definitely an addict.

I’ve explored some other lists and sites about hedgies but HHW seems to have the best sense of humor by far, and I’ve only made it through a small part of it. My bit for the moment:

There is now a hedgehog named Harold,
The cutest could be, I done caroled.
Still scared of his shadow,
It is terribly sad, oh,
With prickles he likes to imperil.

This same hedgehog is ever so prickly,
And he likes to poke very quickly.
Slowly taming a bit,
But still prone to a fit,
I hope someday I’ll know if he’s tickly.

While on top he’s tremendously bristly,
His belly is soft, warm, and squishy.
His four little feet
Are cute but not neat,
As he tramps all over his dishy.

(You’re welcome to add to it if so inclined!)

Looking forward to getting to know you!
Cedar

Re:HEY MEMBERS!!!!!!!!! - 2007/04/29 13:58 I previously posted that I had one hedgehog, Pippi. As of yesterday there is a new member of our family, Paprika (P-K for short). UPDATE: THE FOURTH HEDGIE HAS ARRIVED AT Camp Aunt Joys in upstate NY:

Rambo (dob 2-27-05, pet store purchase 9-23-06?, dod 11-4-06). Rambo was a cool dude, if Fonzie had been had hedgehog he would have been Rambo (short for rambunctious since he was the most active of the four pet store hedgies).

Pippi (dob 7-16-06, adopted from CThogs 11-18-06, presently 9-1/2 mo old, Pippi went to rest on 6-4-07) Diva Pippi was a local celebrity that put the small town of Broadalbin on the internet with her predictions at a Hedgehog Day Ceremony.

Paprika (dob unknown, estimated Nov 2006 and we're going to pick the 17th since that is John's favorite number), a pass around hedgie who is reported to have come from a breeder in NJ to a young man who relinquished her as he plans to go to college, to a family with lot of animals and activity and a month later she was lovingly relinquished to us yesterday, 4-28-07. Weighing in at 440 grams we estimate her age to be 5-1/2 months and have knicknamed her P-k.

Max arrived on 7-21-07, we estimate he will be four years old in August with his year of birth being 2004. Max's owner has been breaking out in hives the past year and feels bad she can no longer handle Max so she made the decision to rehome him to someone who can spend time with him. Max is an older, mature hedgehog, and loves to be up wheelin' during the daytime and doesn't mind being watched. He does his business very neatly and has earned the name 'Colonel Maxfield, gentleman hedgehog'.

Number of hedgehogs? Not even close to enough...1 currently, but 2 more in 10 days...yay!

How long have you owned hedgehogs? 2004

How did you get involved in the crazy world of hedgehogs? Wanted a cool pet & got my first hedgehog Ollie from a pet store. Now I'm addicted, lol Hedgies are like potato chips...you can't ever have just 1

Re:HEY MEMBERS!!!!!!!!! - 2007/08/06 08:27 First name: Stephanie

Location: I go to school in mid-Michigan, I am from the the west side of the state, and my fiance from the east side.

Number of Hedgehogs: Two! We just adopted our baby Noodles two weeks ago- and of course there is Cotton, our little sweet heart

How long have you owned hedgehogs: Since June 2007.

Owner, breeder, or just hopeful: Proud owner, dreaming of breeding someday.

How did you get involved in the crazy world of hedgehogs: Oh boy. Okay, so I had wanted a cat actually, but my living situation at the time deemed that impossible. I had chanced across Cute Overload.com and found this page on hedgies. Needless to say... I completely fell in love with them, and my fiance did too (how could you not with those little sweet faces?) which was a complete surprise seeing as he isn't really keen on owning a bunch of animals- my fiance and I already had two ryukin fish. He wanted a hedgie badly, and at first I wasn't so keen on actually owning one. I've had many small mammals before- and I wasn't keen on cleaning out the wood shavings and knew what a mess that could be. But after doing tons of research, we made our choice and contacted Sarah of Double S Hedgehog Ranch in Illinois, where we went to go pick up our baby girl Cotton about two months after the whole thing began. We've been loving life with hedgies every since

I haven't yet posted pictures of my babies, so I hope this works!

Re:HEY MEMBERS!!!!!!!!! - 2007/08/06 14:07 First name? Jeannette

Location? (state, province, or foriegn country is fine): Syracuse, NY

Number of hedgehogs? Soon to be one at the end of this week!

How long have you owned hedgehogs? T minus four days to ownership!!

Breeder, owner, or just hopeful? Soon to be owner, our deposit is in, my better half has almost completed a Cavy Cage and we have a list of 20 possible girl names!

How did you get involved in the crazy world of hedgehogs? Carlo and I are animal people, plain and simple. We'd rather share our lives with animals more than we would with most people. We have a cat (Enoch Emory), small dog (Meneo), five male betta fish(Bogie, Fisher King, Royale w/ Cheese, Noir, & TK), one female beta fish (Christine), male and female gold dust molly fish (Harold & Maude), four danio fish (the Rocketts), two emerald correy fish (we just call them the vacumes), three snails, and one very small aquatic frog.
Four years ago I had rescued a Pacu, Jack Demsey, and African Ciclid from a neighbor of ours. He had purchased the Pacu and other fish because they are aggressive, "look cool," and a Pacu is a vegetarian member of the Pirhana family so is legal but still looks "mean." However, the one inch fish you get at the pet store grows to 24"+ long and at least 8"-12" tall and most people do not realize the care involved. Prior to taking in these fish we had been planning on getting a small animal to add to the family but due to the Pacu needing a 75 gallon aquarium and a lot of maintenance, we didn't have the time or resources to add anyone else. We had been trying to find a "forever" home for the fish since the moment we aquired them due to not having the room for a 120 gallon+ aquarium which is what a Pacu will eventually need. We had planned on either a rat or possibly a ferret or bird originally but during the time we had the Pacu, we met a woman at PetSmart who had a hedgehog in a travel bag and we fell in LOVE with her! When we found a forever home for the fish we researched hedgehogs A LOT and decided to get one from Pierce's Pogs (Julie is very nice). SO EXCITED OUR GIRL IS COMING HOME SOON!!!!! woohoo:

How did you get involved in the crazy world of hedgehogs?
It started two years ago. A friend from church got a hedgehog and I petted him/her (don't know what the hedgie was) and time went on. Then about 2 months ago my mom and I found a baby mice all by himself. It just stormed and their was a cat in the area, so we figured its mom was dead. So we brought him in. 3 days later he died sadly. He wasn't weaned. We made his last days alive comfortable. After that I really wanted another pet besides my min pin. My mom said well we can always get another mouse. So a few days later we went and picked up two fancy mice. They are really cool, and have their own little personality's. But they are more my mom's. So then I looked for a pet of my own. I looked at hamsters, chinchillas, ect. Then I remembered Amy having a hedgehog. So I studied for the awhile to learn about them. I didn't want to get one and not know anything. Then I found a breeder. And Now everything is going good!

How did you get involved in the crazy world of hedgehogs? I have wanted a hedgehog since the first time I heard about them about 10yrs ago. Unfortunately they are still rare in this country and have been almost impossible to get, so I didn't think that i'd get the chance to own one for a very long time. However, I was in one of my local pet shops last week and was amazed to see a couple of these gorgeous creatures for sale. So I am now the proud owner of Hector!
I also have 3 dogs, 2 house rabbits, 2 chinchillas, 2 guinea-pigs, 8 rats, a cat and a hamster.
