need a bigger wheel? - 2007/04/05 12:10 Hi all! I'm new to this site and am soon to aquire my first hedgie around late May early June (I'll be out of school then for the summer so I can devote my time to the new baby) I have already begun to gather the things I will be needing for my little prickly bundle of joy. I bought the little guy(or gal) a comfort wheel that is 8 1/2 inches in diameter, but the local lady at the pet shop later told me that would not be large enough for my hog once it is full grown. Can any tell me if that is true, or just this ladies personal opinion. I want to be sure I can make me headgie as happy as possible and a too small exercise wheel won't due. Thanks for your help!

Re:need a bigger wheel? - 2007/04/05 12:48 I've read in multiple places that it will be too small once he is full grown. They can still run on it, but it will hurt their spine in the long run since the position they have to run in is unnatural. Get an 11 or 12 inch wheel for when he gets bigger. Jessica

Because of their body shape, hedgehogs need the larger wheels and running on a small wheel can actually damage their backs (I was going to say spine, but....). I would even recommend that large wheel for any baby ast weaning age and recommend you change right away.

www.qualitycage.com/ has a really nice metal wheel.

Re:need a bigger wheel? - 2007/04/05 13:32 Thanks lots for the info! I have the reciept and plan to take it back tonight or tommorow. I'll be sure to get the giant sized one instead. I wouldn't wan't the poor thing to mess up his back trying to have fun running on the wheel. I love my baby Emma!

Re:need a bigger wheel? - 2007/04/15 12:34 I am glad to say that I was able to return my smaller wheel and get the larger 12" kind. And the best part, they were on sale when I went back to exchange, so I got 15% the normal price! I love my baby Emma!
