Question about litter training - 2007/04/25 10:09 Hello everyone! I am new to this forum and a new owner of a hedgehog. She is a female named digit! I have put a litter box in her cage and even tried to put some of her waste in it to make her want to use it, but the only place she now pees or poops is all over her wheel. I do not find any waste anywhere else. I wasn't sure if there is a way to get her to use her litter box..... does anyone have any suggestions? Also yesterday while she was in her playpen that I made her she ran over to her litter box but then peed outside it. I thought this was a big development, as she was associating the litter box with her waste, but will she eventually start to use it while she is in her cage or in her playpen? Any help would be great here! Thanks everyone! http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

Re:Question about litter training - 2007/04/25 11:47 Some hedgies do better than others about litter training. Some never really get it. As strange as this sounds, I have always had better luck with females at litter training. I have always wondered if males kind of mark their territory. Maybe it is all a coincidence, who knows.

The one thing I do know is that you will never be able to get them to stop pooping in their wheel. Just look at it like this, a poopy wheel is usually a healthy hedgehog. Learn to just deal with the wheel poop. It also will spin out while they are running and you will have to clean the ground below as well.

If you are working with a baby hedgehog, keeping the litter box a little dirty is good. It will help her learn. She will smell her poop and it will hopefully lure her to potty there. Another thing you can do is to always place her in the litter box for a quick potty before you get her out to play.

My daughter has a hedgie, he just happens to be male, and she doesn't keep a litter box in his cage anymore because he never learned to used it and it just took up room in his cage. I have litter boxes in all of my cages and the 2 males I have sleep in them. My females will use them but the wheels will always be dirty in all cages.

Re:Question about litter training - 2007/04/25 14:45 Oh okay... well with the wheel pooping I guess it is easier to clean upi then if she poops and pees in her bedding! All I have to do is take her wheel out and wash it. Do you think it would be a good idea to get a litter box to put under the wheel. Right now I have one of the corner litter boxes. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

Re:Question about litter training - 2007/04/25 15:21 I have heard of some people who put their wheels in some sort of litter box area. Don't get me wrong I have hedgies that are pretty well potty trained so it is worth trying. I just don't want you to get frustrated if potty training doesn't work for your hedgie.

Re:Question about litter training - 2007/04/26 07:14 Yeah I am not really too concerned if she doesn't get it.... I still love her! Overall though she only eliminates on her wheel and she hasn't done anything on me yet, it seems like she waits until she is in her cage or playpen. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

Re:Question about litter training - 2007/09/12 13:39 Does anyone's hedgie go on both the wheel AND the litter box? I bought a litter box to try it out but if he doesn't take to it... I guess I'll stick to the wheel.

Also, in general, will they eliminate anywhere aside from the wheel if they do not take to littler boxes?

I recommend people get a cookie tray as a litter box and put the wheel in the tray. This way, anything that falls off the wheel is already in the litter, and it will help the hedgie understand that that's where to go. I also suggest that people pick up any 'accidents' and put them in the litter too. I guarantee your hedgehog will understand what you want them to do - then it's just a matter of whether they care about pleasing you!

Yes.... Digit is all litterbox trained now! She only does her business in her box now. Recently she has started to only do her business in her litter box and not on her wheel. She will get off her wheel just go to into her litter box! It makes my job so much easier!
