Food limiting age! - 2007/05/02 21:54 I know I shouldn't be limiting the food yet on a young hedgeling, but at about what age should I stop giving him as much as he can eat and start making sure he gets only a certain amount each day? Jessica

Re:Food limiting age! - 2007/05/03 06:16 As long as your hedgehog is not overweight, there is no reason to limit their food. Most will stop eating when they are full and leave food in the bowl. Ann

Re:Food limiting age! - 2007/05/03 06:31 Alrighty, I will check on him every so often to make sure he can still roll into a ball. I only worry because I have a weakness for plump animals and don't want to be subconciously trying to make him fat.

Re:Food limiting age! - 2007/05/29 10:13 Also, be aware that a young hedgehog can eat as much as an adult, because they are still growing. It has been vet recommended that you not keep a hedgehog's food "on tap" and make sure to limit it to an adult's feeding size regardless of her age, because they are prone to obesity. *~*Steph*~*

Re:Food limiting age! - 2007/05/29 11:12 Adult daily feeding amounts vary a lot from hedgehog to hedgehog. The best thing to do is get to know your own hedgehogs requirements. If I give my adults a bit more than I know they will eat, they will leave some and not gorge themselves. Babies can eat an astonishing amount and while they are growing you need to make sure they have food available at all times. They do have growth spurts during the first year where they will all of a sudden start eating more. If you have a hedgehog that runs a lot on his/her wheel they are burning lots of energy and you really need to be sure they have adequate food. If you see them getting porky, that would be the time to limit their food intake. Ann
