pregnant signs - 2007/05/14 21:42 Okay question: Addie had the chance to breed with Elias from April 28-30th and I was wondering when I could expect to notice a different in weight/shape? I ask this as I gave Addie a bath tonight and have noticed that I thought she had gained a little weight over the last couple of days but tonight when I had her in the bath I saw that she appeared to be rounder then. But I dont know if this is just me being hopeful or if she could be showing now Dani Marshall Kansas

Re:pregnant signs - 2007/05/15 17:15 that list of signs is making me real nervous - the last family only had Pk a month and who knows about the college kid who had her before. She has a really strange odor that shampooing isn't getting rid of, her fresh poops make me gag and just last night John noticed teets on her and I replied, of course, she's a girl but now I'm starting to wonder if there isn't something more to this plump marshmallowy pink belly.

Maybe there is a reason for her being overweight rather than having been given three scoops of CSFCLS a day and three crickets. I've had her two weeks, the last family had her a month, don't know if she was with another hedgie six weeks ago.

don't know what their gestation period is, what is the probability and what do I do to help her prepare - when I gave this pass around hedgie a home it hadn't occurred to me she had been around.

Re:pregnant signs - 2007/05/15 18:55 Gestation is about 35 or so ...can be longer. You may want to read up on some of the articles on World regarding breeding, etc just to be on the safe side and it never hurts to be prepared. Julie Pierce

Re:pregnant signs - 2007/05/15 20:37 I've put a plastic box in her tank and filled it with fleece scraps. I have a large fleece clam shell cozy that I've draped over it. I'll look up some of the articles, I've received an email saying that nipples do show on fluffy hedgies... but Paprika's recent irritability - I could palm her a couple of days ago and tonight she bit me twice (I had put gloves back after she nailed John last night and drew blood). She does not want to be handled at all and we thought she was starting to get used to us after two weeks, she has been pretty friendly up until last night. Where this is a blessed event for starnighstarsky... I am hoping it's a false alarm.

Re:pregnant signs - 2007/05/15 23:20 Average gestation is 35 days, top is around 50. Clutter, you should be in the clear, methinks.

Re:pregnant signs - 2007/05/16 20:45 well, an ex breeder friend of mine told me how to prepare the tank for babies... covered it with a cloth today and made a nesting box with strips of fleece and draped a fleece clam cozy over it... it has been untouched for 24 hours and she's been in that old reliable shirt sleeve she came with. SO I THINK YOU'RE RIGHT, WE'RE IN THE CLEAR! Someone has suggested she might be quilling since we estimate her at six months but there are no loose anywheres. She just bit John twice tonight, she does not want to handled or have hands shoo her. Haven't switched foods, she's still getting her CSFCLS but I have been putting an extra dish in there with some L'Avian for her to try. As much as I did not want a litter, I was hoping this sudden bad disposition was from pregnancy. We've had her a little over two weeks and she's been biting the past three days - anyone got any ideas?

Re:pregnant signs - 2007/05/17 06:22 she's been biting the past three days - anyone got any ideas? Biting has been addressed a lot in the other sections of the forum. Have you changed hand soap recently? Do you have food smells on your hands? Keep fingers away to help her avoid temptation. Do not put her back in her cage immediately after biting. Ann

Re:pregnant signs - 2007/05/17 07:05 I have definitely not been putting her back, we keep her up for I don't want her to learn that behavior.

You might be right about the handsoap, I had bought that dial foam antibacterial when P-k arrived for we wash our hands constantly with two hedgies. Then Pippi stopped taking the worm from our hands and we assumed it was because she did not like the new soap so last weekend we went back to the Soft Soap creamy liquid. She bit John's pinky finger on Monday, chomped on my gloves twice on Tuesday (I hadn't been wearing them until she drew blood on John), then last night she bit John's hand twice and now he wants to start to wear gloves.

We are putting off trimming her nails until we get through this biting phase. I will look up those articles, thanks.

Re:pregnant signs - 2007/05/17 10:36 Clutter,
Hon don't worry you are fine we are all here to learn and ask questions. However I do have good news last night I offered Addie a small bit of BBQ chip in the hopes that she would like the smell and that as she relaxed I would be able to get a look at her belly to see about her nipples. Which I was able to and her nipples are extened so heres to keeping our fingers crossed her first due date is June 2nd so will let everyone if I hear squeaking coming from her cage.

Re:pregnant signs - 2007/05/21 23:53 Well glad to see things are going ok with Missy Addie. I think Elias came home learning a bad habit *ahem*. I think he's learned how to.....not need a woman around so to speak . Thanks Auntie for teaching him an all too valuable lesson...his bath's have been increased due to the amount of crusties in his fur

Re:pregnant signs - 2007/05/29 22:09 Okay another crazy questions about Miss Addie and the possible babies,
The last three days or so she hasn't wanted to run around or anything, she will only come out for her 15 mealies and then it is back into her nest box. Then earlier tonight she went crazy she was running around throwing fleece strips everywhere and tunneling like it was her last night on earth and this was at like 5:30pm. Now she is curled up in her nest box and I am not sure what to think. I picked up all the "dry" pieces she manged to land a few in her water bowl and relined them into her nest box. So my questions is this like the few days before we humans give birth when we go on a crazy cleaning keep busy thing or is it just me hoping again? My mother in law who hasn't seen her since I got her April 26th was like she is HUGE!!!! Now personally I don't see a huge different but I would say she has put on weight. Anyway any help with this question would be great and I am going to place a blanket over her cage (which is the playroom from the Expo) and leave her alone just in case.-

Re:pregnant signs - 2007/06/01 22:24 Well I think that not only is Miss Addie indeed pregnant but that she may have her babies close to her first due date as tonight when I got her out for a few minutes all four of her feet where on my hands and all of a sudden a bump popped up on the side/middle of her back half which although I haven't "noticed" her getting bigger it seems she is getting heavier. So will let everyone know when we hear squeaks. Dani Marshall Kansas

Re:pregnant signs - 2007/06/03 08:13 Whew, false scare with Paprika. I still don't know what all those signs were about, but she is a happy camper in her larger cage and has devoured a couple of dishes of watemelon this past week. Any news on Miss Addie and babies?

I wonder if Paprika had either a false pregnancy or sometimes they can be pregnant, lose the pregnancy and reabsorb the unborn fetuses.....or maybe she is just a big chunky poopy hedgehog by nature LOL

Re:pregnant signs - 2007/06/03 09:10 Well I just went in to check on her and she wouldn't come out of her nestbox so I just placed a few mealies in front of her and left her alone. I didn't hear any squeaking so I don't think she has had them yet although maybe she has started to either that or she is just resting. Will post again tommorrow if any new signs or babies appear. Re:pregnant signs - 2007/06/08 14:51 Becca,
Thanks there is still no babies but I'm wondering if she will wait and have them after we leave for Disneyworld which will be tommorrow morning at 0500 when we leave for the airport and to Disneyworld for our week long family trip. My mother in law will be watching my kennel while we are gone but she will let me know if she has her litter while we are gone. So I will let everyone know as soon as I hear anything.

Re:pregnant signs - 2007/06/10 04:20 do they have false pregancies? Logic tells me there is probably a difference between that and absorbing the unborn fetus. It really puzzles me, she had all these signs at the same time had to be more than coincidence (losing 30 grams in a week, really bad body smell despite baths, smelly poops, nipples protruding and extreme irritability and biting). I've asked John if he noticed anything when cleaning the tank and he says no - if she had delivered and disposed there would be a trace of something on the fleece for this girl is not neat. There is a definite lessening of her body mass, and those awful smells went away after the scare was over and she's been friendlier. thanks Julie, knowing these possibilities helps makes sense of what happened.
