a cookie sheet works well as an inexpensive litter tray. i bought one at the dollar store. i put it under the wheel so that everything will fall into the pan. i use carefresh, although you might just try paper towels to start off with. stay away from corn cob type litter as that can stick to hedgies' gentlemanly parts. just make sure whatever you use it's different than what you use as bedding. some hedgehogs never learn to use the litter box, but don't let that discourage you. as hedgehogmadhatter said it takes patience.
