    Taking to the Litter Pan

I am training Cotton for the litter box- but I\'ve heard males are easier to train than females, so maybe that\'s why she\'s having issues learning the litter box

I have a bucket wheel, and a pan for a litter tray that I cut a side out so she can easily get in and out. You know those plastic/flexible silicone baking dishes they are coming out with nowadays? I bought a smaller square sized one so that Cotton wouldn\'t hurt herself, and she loves it. I put it right in front of the wheel, and she can walk herself right over the edge of it... She hates using the actual door I made for her :-P.

But anyway, I line it with Yesterday\'s news for ferrets, and every time I see a terd that is outside her litter box, I put it in. Since I put her litter box in front of her wheel, she has been using it instead of the wheel! She still pees in the wheel, but I think because the litter box is so close to her wheel now, she feels she can make it to the pot without having too much time distracted away from her running. Eventually, I will gradually move the litter box away from her wheel and train her that way. Everytime that I clean out her litter however, she forgets to use the litter box (even if it is right beside her wheel). I\'m thinking she probably doesn\'t smell her poop in it and can\'t figure out where to go

Anyone else want to share their litter training stories/ideas?

Our first hedgehog was reliably litter trained and she always used the same corner. Sometimes we would try to change things up for her by moving things around in her cage. She would always move whatever she could back to the \"right\" place. Litterbox, igloo, whatever she could move.
If you train Cotton to use one spot and then try to change it, Cotton may have other ideas. Depends how stubborn the lil girl is.

I had a question about this. My hedgie Tuck caught on to litter training fast I use yesterday's news in a tote lid under his wheel when I first set up his cage I had the wheel in the corner and he would squeeze under behing his wheel and poop right in the gap where the litter pan wasn't! So I cut some of the lid so the wheel fit snug and there was no gap and vola! He would go in the front side (and of course on his wheel-drats- haha) here's my delmma I moved his wheel out of the corner so I could put a dig box in that spot I only moved his wheel about 4 inches but ever send he will poo right in that open spot AND his litter box. I keep placing his "oopsies" in his litter tray. It's only been a week with 4 accidents. Think he'll catch on? Or is that his favorite spot? Does anyone have hedgies who only go in corners? Just curious I'll probably try to fix it for a week or two if I don't see results I'll just move the wheel back.

Sounds to me like he is "spot" trained rather than "tray" trained. Maybe reorganize the cage so his tray is back where it had been, so he hits the target again. Otherwise, you can just give him time, maybe he will move his "spot" to match his "tray"

I moved his tray back now he likes to squeeze into the back corner behind his wheel to do his business and ends up missing the tiniest part where his tray doesn't reach :/ any thoughts on maybe trying a corner litter pan? I can't tell if it's the corner he likes or the hiding behind/under the wheel. Little stinker
