Thread: Hanging Hedgie!

    Re:Hanging Hedgie!

Jo, you\'re funny. Do you have enough room for your kids in your house full of hedgies?

Thanks for the warning about the cage.

I don\'t really like the wire cages so much. Not that I have any experience putting hedgies in them, but we\'re liking the Sterilite containers so much that it\'s not worth the expense & potential danger of trying anything else.

We use the clear Sterilites too. We just leave the lid off because we don\'t have any kids or cats or anything & the cake cover wheels that my husband\'s making are an inch or two too tall to be able to use the lid. However, with a few of our new hedgehogs I\'m a little concerned that they may be able to get on top of their sleeping container & there\'s a small chance of escape....so Ben\'s going to drill holes in the lids & then saw off the corner of the lid that would fit above the wheel. That way they can have their awesome wheels and stay safely in their cages.

You would be better off putting the holes in the sides of the containers, like in my pic above. That way if you happen to have to stack them for a trip or something you still have the air flow instead of it being blocked with other totes.

And the crowded situation will be alleviated next summer.. it was supposed to be done THIS summer... but due to our van\'s transmission deciding to croak on us, the addition did not happen! I am determined it WILL happen next spring/summer!

My Squeebie also climbs and tried to stick his head through the top of his cage. I went to a lumberyard and had them pre-cut some wood for me, got some heavy duty nylon screen, and made him a cage. He loves it, but I am worried about keeping him warm in the winter because the heating pad doesn\'t go through the plywood bottom too well. Off to buy a heat disk.

I wouldn\'t keep him in that cage long term. The pee and poo will eventually soak into the plywood and make for one heck of a constant stink... not to mention the mold and mildew!

I agree, I have sealed everything and put linoleum on the bottom. His cage gets cleaned nightly since it is right by my bed (no stinky hog). I wish I had the floor space for some of these cool Sterlite cages built but that and 2 nosey cats prevent this. My kitties don\'t hurt him, but they love to lay in his play-pen when he is in there. I think they see him as a hairbrush with feet.

I use the 60qt sterilites for my single hedgies... for ventilation I drill holes(GO SLOW! or you will crack the plastic) and for the top you can modify it a bit so the wheel will fit thru the lid. MUCH better than wood! And a whole lot lighter!
