Breed the two different species to each other? I\'ve not heard of it. Def. heard of lions and tigers mating, or dolphins and orcas, etc, but not of gerbils and hamsters.
Breeding a gerbil to a gerbil, or hamster to hamster, absolutely.![]()
I\'ve been wondering for a while, can you breed hamsters and gerbils? I\'ve never seen one but I\'ve heard cases where thats happened. Any info?

Looking into it quickly, it appears that they would fight and possibly kill each other rather than breed.
Stasi,
You are correct Hamsters (ANY KIND) and Gerbils/Jirds/Dupries will NOT cross bred. Not only will they fight each other to death first but they are not compatible in that sense.
Emraled, I know that it is sometimes possible to get a hamster to raise an orphaned gerbil baby and vice verse (like a dog will raise/nurse a kitten/deer/pig/ect) but they are two complete different kinds of animal the only thing that is the same about both is that they are both rodents.
As a past breeder of both I can tell you this for a fact as we had a large rescue train where a female hamster in heat escaped from its cage and got into a cage with a adult male gerbil both were found killed the next morning.
Emraled,
If you have any more questions about any of the rodents I listed here please feel free to contact me I will be happy to help you.

They\'re probably right! But I\'ve seen beutiful cases of babies from Sulcatas and Leopard torts. that cross bred. Some dude tried to do it for money... WHICH IS VERY WRONG! Though they were very pretty..
I know dolphin/orca crosses happen in the wild sometimes...Honestly, I hadn't looked into the lions/tigers, but would think that it would be a reasonable assumption that AI was used? Hmmm...something to think about I guess.![]()
I would wonder what kind of lifespan such cross breeds have? Or would they maybe have any health issues from cross breeding?
