That is what I had thought. that you very much. There is no way I would want to do that to my hedgie, she's my little buddy![]()
Yeah pbplayer, the sandpaper is not a good idea. Their nails wouldn't even be affected, it would just rub their poor little pads off their feet![]()

Yes they make great little buddies don't they ? You will get more comfortable with nail clipping and find a way that works for both of you![]()
haha well to be honest when I got my ducks it was extremely irresponsible. I knew so much about chickens but nothing about ducks and when we went to the farm I got my chickens from the farmer lady was like" we have these 2 as well, they're lovely little things and the only 2 we have left. . ." they were tiny and in this horrible little dirty house (they weren't mistreated it just didn't look very nice) and just playing in mud and I felt so sorry for them in there knowing that in my garden they'd have a really big area to run around in and I got them a massive swimming pool to swim in (was going to dig a pond but they actually enjoy fresh water so with a pool i can tip it out and refill it when it looks gross ) and like I said I knew nothing about them and she really seemed to want to get rid of them. . .and they were so so cute so I said I'd buy them, they were cheaper than the chickens so it worked out fine, when we got home I realised I knew nothing and she had told us they could eat the chicken's pellets so I knew they were set for food but I had to do loads of research that same day just to make sure I wouldn't give them any veg or anything they were allergic too. . . it's such a good job they're easy to care for because otherwise I would have panicked! I never normally get a pet without researching for months but I just had visions of her letting someone horrible have them because she wanted to get rid of them so muchthey're happy little things though so I'm glad I got them
oh and the part about hedgies learning words. . .I don't see why notbecause my Pricklebic associates the sound of his meal worm pack opening with getting something nice so he comes out to see so if you regularly say a word and they begin to associate it they would learn it wouldn't they?
Pavlov's dogs and all that!

It sounds like you saved your ducks (from a potentially bad future home and/or a current home where they may have not really been wanted)That is how I got my hedgie. The pet store I got her from kept her in a pretty small cage (only about the size of a 10 gallon fish take) with no wheel or hide box, a very dirty water bowl and it seemed very unkept with lots of poop scattered throughout. When I asked to look at her the store owner kicked the cage to try and wake her up. When he did that I had to take her home. I am happy to say that she seems very happy now and loves getting taken out of her cage to explore and be pampered lol. My girlfriend says I treat Riley better than her sometimes haha.
I hadn't even thought of Pavlov. You are absolutely right too because whenever I give her treats (which is usually every other night) I will say treats, show them to her, then put them in her treat bowl. Now she seems to understand that treats means she is getting something yummy. The simplest things make her happy lol.
How big are your ducks now and do they need a large area to run and play in?
Stacyhedgie .. They are great little buddies. Riley loves to hide out in my sweatshirt pocket when I walk around the house. I have learned that if I cut her nails right when she gets up it is a lot easier because she is still groggy from sleeping.
wow I would have definitely done what you did with the hedgie! I would have been like "in fact no I don't even need to see her I'll just take her now. . :/ " that's really horrible I hate it when places sell them without knowing what they're doing
and awww yes it sounds like she's learned well!!!
The ducks are about half the size of a chicken and they look like little chubby things because that's the shape they're bred to be, they have right cute little faces tooYesterday they were jumping up out of their water to take food out of my hand but when they're on dry ground they're not very sociable until you've caught them then they're okay with being held but I think they would be a lot more sociable if they had been handled more as babies because I've seen people post videos of them following them around and all sorts
They don't need that much space actually and can be kept in a run but it's better to just clip their wing feathers and make the garden secure because then they can just wander around the garden
They don't need a big pool like I have for them to swim in they can just have a little paddling pool or something because they generally just like to dunk their heads under the water and sit in the water

Pbplayer, so sad about your hedgie in the pet store ! It's unfortunate that the workers in pet stores usually don't know what each animal's needs are, and don't even seem to want to learn. And when I've heard stories of people who try to inform them or make a suggestion, they usually just come up with a reason why they can't change anything or just shrug it off. And I think most people are intimidated by hedgehogs anyway, so I'm sure they very rarely get held out of their cage until someone buys them. Sounds like you saved her from a very uncomfortable life !
I also put my hedgie in a hoodie pocket tooThey are fun to just hang around with, even if they don't do very much. And good call on cutting her nails right when you get her out !
Nico - The ducks sound so cute ! Maybe you could post some pics of them sometime !
these are a couple of photos of them when they were quite young and if you notice one of them lo0ks like a girl . . .but it seems 'she' has decided 'she' wants to be a boy as 'she' now has a fully coloured head and no lines over her eyes. . .it's not a green head like the boy has ended up with but it's fully brown and 'she's' never laid any eggs so I'm pretty sure it's a boy ahaha (there's a link to video below to0 that shows them a little more recently but not really recent because it still doesn't have the full dark head. . . )
you can get call ducks in loads of colours but mine are like mallards
I like the really bright white ones and might get some of them in the future

p.s. please ignore me talking in a high pitched voice to the chickens
oh and that's a pj top in my pictures. .haha![]()

Sorry to be a downer but...
Ducks, chickens, etc. are considered farm animals in the states and as such are banned in most urban area's, although some you can potentially get a special exception.
surely you can still apply for permits in the US? A lot of animals in the UK such as Goats, Pigs etc can be kept as pets but you have to apply for a license from Defra. . .you don't need to here for ducks or chickens (depending on the rules of your local area) but for larger things you do. . .I'm sure there is something you can apply for in order to keep them?![]()
