HoAs wont allow it for fear of lowering home values, many cities wont either for the same reason.

There is a chance of actually getting one but I can't say I've ever known anyone that got one... For those I've known that want pets like that it's been easier to move to a more rural area.

There was a small push about a year back to allow this sort of thing... so there is a chance.

awww that's a right shame, I'd still look into it though pbplayer because you never know. . . just make sure you do find out whether it's legal and whether you need permits because you wouldn't like to have them taken off you would you

I want some pygmy goats but they have to be registered by DEFRA in the UK and if there was an outbreak of foot and mouth here again and the place where I buy them from gets it (even after I get them) Defra could potentially insist the goats were destroyed and as they would be pets like my chickens and ducks are it would be heartbreaking

On being able to keep ducks in the US, there was that episode of friends where chandler had the ducks taken away by pest control.. although don't if that counts as an official decree lol

And I think most people are intimidated by hedgehogs anyway, so I'm sure they very rarely get held out of their cage until someone buys them. Sounds like you saved her from a very uncomfortable life !

I also put my hedgie in a hoodie pocket too They are fun to just hang around with, even if they don't do very much. And good call on cutting her nails right when you get her out !
I took her right then and there. I had told the owner that I had read they need bigger cages that needed to be cleaned regularly but like you said he did not seem to care. After that I had no doubts what so ever about getting her. She took awhile to warm up to me because of the way that she was being treated at the pet shop and the conditions she was living in but after about 3 or 4 weeks she started to warm up. Now the only time she will hiss is when I wake her up (id be grumpy to if someone woke me up lol) but after she realizes its me she has no problems at all. She seems to be very happy with her home, I can hear her running for hours at night and every morning I see her tp tube and ball (it makes a jingle noise) in different places. I know she trusts me because she will fall asleep on me sprawled out. She won't let me touch her face yet but she doesn't mind when I pet her between her ears on her head. She just came out to get some food and do her evening run, soon she will probably be wondering why I haven't taken her out yet She has gotten into a rythme of come out around 8:30 pm to run and eat and then doing a whole lot more running, eating, and playing after I put her back in her cage from being out with me for awhile.

I don't know why they would fear lowering home prices. The market already went bust so they can't really go much lower haha.
I will still at least try to see if I can get a permit for them. I live in NJ and I needed to get a permit in order to have my hedgie here.

and awww yes it sounds like she's learned well!!!

The ducks are about half the size of a chicken and they look like little chubby things because that's the shape they're bred to be, they have right cute little faces too Yesterday they were jumping up out of their water to take food out of my hand but when they're on dry ground they're not very sociable until you've caught them then they're okay with being held but I think they would be a lot more sociable if they had been handled more as babies because I've seen people post videos of them following them around and all sorts They don't need that much space actually and can be kept in a run but it's better to just clip their wing feathers and make the garden secure because then they can just wander around the garden They don't need a big pool like I have for them to swim in they can just have a little paddling pool or something because they generally just like to dunk their heads under the water and sit in the water
I really like the pictures and video of your ducks, they are sooooo cool. I will definitely be investigating weither or not I am bale to own the ducks in residential areas here in New Jersey. I doubt I will be able to though because I needed to get a permit just to have my hedgie, which I have to get fixed because they put that Riley was a male on the permit and she is clearly not lol. It won't hurt to try and see about the permit though. I really hope that I will be able to get them because my backyard is pretty big so they would have plenty of room to roam around and have their duck fun. Thankfully my hedgie really enjoys her home now. Even though it took her almost a month to get used to me and not be afraid. Now the only time she hisses is when I wake her up. But I would be grumpy to if someone woke me up lol. Like I had said in my post to Stacy, Riley trusts me now because she will fall asleep on me sprawled out while I am petting her She won't let me touch her face yet but she doesn't mind when I pet her between her ears on her head.

this is quite unrelated but. . .
I find it really funny that my hedgie is the only pet I've ever had where when I've first ever met them I haven't feared they would bite me! like just put my hand right near his face without it even crossing my mind he might bite. . .he's only ever bitten me once and that was because my finger smelled like meal worms and he let go as soon as he realised it wasn't one! although to be fair none of my animals have properly bitten me anyway

I'm glad your hedgie likes it where she is now it sounds like she's fine with you she's just a bit grumpy when she's just been woken up like you said
my little boy has only fallen asleep on me once, it was after a fo0t bath and he was really tired because I did it quite early in the morning and he'd been wheeling till the early hours so he'd not had much sleep. . .and he fell asleep on a towel on a hot water bottle but normally he just wants to crawl all over the place haha

My hedgie has done the same thing. She has bitten my finger once or twice because it smelled like strawberries/mealworms but as soon as I said no she let go and went to check her treat bowl assuming I left some in there for her Of course every time she has bitten me I had just put her treats in there haha. I finally got her front nails clipped but she wasn't to happy with me after I had clipped them I gave her mealworms afterward to let her know she did good and some how I think it is going to have to be a regular thing lol.

She does not like to be woken up lol. A few nights a week Riley will do the same as your hedge (scurry around and explore) but once she finally tires herself out she will crawl onto my old shirt I use to carry her around in (when she's not in the pocket of my hoodie) and fall asleep for a little bit until I put her back into her cage where she will spend hours running in her wheel. She's an odd little hedgie because some nights she'll want to explore while other (most) nights she's content with just relaxing. I think it all depends on what type of mood she is in. Silly little one she is

Is that normal for them to want to do both? I know they tend to be either explorers OR relaxers. She seems to be more of a relaxed little one but 2 or 3 nights a week she wants to go explore. Also, does your hedgie like to burrow a lot? Riley seems to really enjoy burrowing through piles of dirty cloths or blankets on the nights she's feeling adventuous.

She gets about 1.5 to 2 hours of out of cage time a night

Nico, thanks for the pics and video - they are so cute !! They do look alot like mallards. I love how their little feet are kicking around in the pool I also recieved a pretty decent bite from my hedgie the other night. I had just been at a restaurant and used their bathroom soap right before I came home and got her out. She started licking my finger a little, and I was thinking aww she's so cute, and I said to my husband, "oh it's probably the soap she smells, haha, I wonder if she'll try to nip me". Well she sure did, she grabbed on and held on for a few seconds and I didn't want to pull away and hurt her teeth, so I just did the whole "owowowowow !!! " thing until she let go. Soo, basically, I know that one was my own fault, I just didn't expect the huge chomp-down I got, I was expecting a little nibble. Now I know better !! And no blood was drawn, just four little dots imprinted in my finger where her little teeth were !

Pbplayer, sounds like you have made great progress with Riley ! That's great that she lets you pet her that much that soon. My hedgie is definitely more of a cuddler and sleeper. She is sleeping on my lap right now as I write this. Every night when I go to get her, she is always still asleep, even though it's usually pretty late when I get her out. She kinda huffs a bit sometimes, but I think that's pretty normal. Then when I hold her up to look at her face, she's usually making a pretty funny scrunched up and annoyed face at me for waking her up . I put her down to run around a few nights a week, and she usually just runs for the nearest blanket or dark place to burrow back into lol. She's definitely a lap hedgehog !

hahaha my hedgie tries to climb down the back of the bed. . . if I have him out on the bed, he will crawl under the pillows and then I have to find him quick because I worry he'll fall down there and get stuck!!!! He's so silly he climbs under the quilt to0 and if I have missed him I have to lift the quilt off carefully and find him!

they're really clever I put him on the landing for him to have a little run around where there's no other animals and he seemed really overwhelmed by the size of it and the fact there was nothing to hide under so he kept walking over to me and climbing in my lap and then walking over to my door and then walking back onto me and then back to my door. . . he must have been able to tell by smell which one was my bedroom! I hope that isn't for a bad reason hahahahaha if it is I blame my boyfriend hahahaha
