Thread: Help! Blood in food dish!

    Help! Blood in food dish!

I went to get Martin from his cage and I noticed in his white food dish there was some red dried substance that looked like blood. It was not a lot and was dried but bright red, it could look similar to berries. However, I haven't fed him any berreis or red foods. I'm very worried. Could he have possible chipped a tooth? He otherwise seems to be behaving normally.

EDIT: I noticed this afternoon his paws are bloody. Not dripping it looks dried. He is using a plastic wheel with no holes but it does have very small ridges, I could not find any that don't. Is he running his feet raw?

I just gave him a quick foot bath and although I could not find any injuries I did notice one of his toenails had grown rather long so I went ahead and clipped his nails, he's grumpy now. I thought maybe that could be the source.

I’m new at the whole hedgehog thing so I tend to fret and have lots of questions. I really adore my rescue hedgehog, Martin <3 In fact, I tend to refer to him as Prince Martin. :^)

Could be a loose tooth. Winston has a chipped front tooth, but that didn't bleed. When he had a loose tooth, that is when I noticed blood, but it wasn't much. Could also be an injury to his mouth, and may require a vet visit. give him a good look over to see if you see any source of blood on him, if not, it more than likely came from his mouth.

Check feet and toenails too-he could have walked in the dish and left blood if his foot is cut. That is pretty common

I've tried my best to look him over but he is still nervous around me and will curl up in a ball if I get too close. I didm't see any dried blood or signs of injury when I watched him though. I also havent seen any signs of blood anywhere else or anything this morning. He is acting normal and eating and drinking tons. What should I do?

Lots of hedgies do this, if he's acting normal, and you didn't notice anything out of the ordinary - just relax. Very likely ran his feet raw, and they mostly heal quite quickly. Keep an eye on him, but I think he's very likely just fine.

Thank you very much. I took his wheel out for the night and probably will one more night, to let his feet heal up. He is doing well otherwise and I gave him some cantaloupe as a treat for being so good during the bath and he LOVED it :-)
